Prayer and fasting can be a daunting season to enter, particularly if you've never experienced it before or you're from a church that never entered a season of prayer and fasting together.
If that's the case, you likely have a number of questions surrounding a time of prayer and fasting. These could include what exactly it entails, how it happens, what the purpose of it is, or even the practicalities of what to expect.
As we countdown to the start of our prayer and fasting season to dedicate 2025 to the Lord, we want to answer your questions! With seven days to go, we'll start with the most basic, what is prayer and fasting?
In essence, prayer and fasting is a spiritual discipline. Fasting has always been part of a way of life of God’s people, from the Old Testament through to our modern times. Without exception, every person who was greatly used by God in the Bible fasted. Alongside regular prayer and Bible reading, it has always been seen as a spiritual discipline that ought to be a regular part of the life of a believer.
While prayer is something we all know about (as it should be part of our daily walk with God), fasting is something we only do occasionally or may be something you’re doing for the first time. Fasting is, by definition, to voluntarily choose to go without food or drink (or both), generally for religious purposes.
Therefore, prayer and fasting is when we abstain from eating (or drinking) and dedicate additional time to praying. In the modern age, fasting other things, such as your smartphone, social media, or TV has also been adopted. However, it is always recommended to try fast food.
This additional time in prayer can be used to grow closer to God, seek His guidance, try and hear from Him for your ministry, understand His vision for you, or any other purpose. The most important thing about a season of prayer and fasting, however, is that there is an increase in your prayer!
Prayer and fasting without an increase in prayer is simply a diet!
It is that simple! Many try to over complicate a season of prayer and fasting. However, there is no need to be worrying or find such a season daunting! Instead, it should be a season of excitement and expectation as you look forward to what God can do for you!
